Long-awaited plans to build a marina in Middlewich are a step closer to becoming a reality with councillors poised to approve the project alongside a raft of new housing, shops and cafes.
Cheshire East Council's southern planning committee has been recommended to approve an outline application for a 12-berth marina, 137 properties, 4,800 sq ft of retail space, 4,400 sq ft of offices and 2,900 sq ft allocated for food outlets.
The scheme is earmarked for an industrial site at the south of Brooks Lane and would involve the relocation of Intertechnic UK Ltd.
Planning officers said the development would provide "much needed affordable housing" and has the potential to being "extensive" improvements to the appearance of the site from the Trent and Mersey Canal. At least 30 per cent of the new properties will be classed as affordable.
A report to be considered by councillors on Wednesday (26 April 2017) added: "The development would provide significant economic benefits through the provision of employment during the construction phase, new homes and benefits for local businesses in Middlewich."
The recommendation for approval comes despite an objection from Persimmon Homes, which raised a series of concerns and claimed that it was "inconceivable" that a housebuilder would pursue this site "given the access through an operational industrial estate and unacceptable living environment".
The marina application forms part of a wider scheme which could result in the creation of more than 400 houses and a rande of leisure facilities.
