A Chester-headquartered dairy, a Lancashire-based jeweller and a wine and spirits supplier in Greater Manchester are among 24 North West companies to feature in The Sunday Times' rankings of Britain's private mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales.
The 24 companies to make the 12th annual Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 league table, down from 30 last year, collectively increased combined sales by 12 per cent to £5bn and operating profits by 22 per cent to £499m. They also employ more than 25,000 people in total.
Among them are Chester-headquartered dairy Meadow Foods with sales of £376m, Lytham St Annes-headquartered jeweller Beaverbrooks with sales of £119m and Irlam-headquartered wine and spirits supplier Kingsland Drinks with sales of £163m.
The biggest mid-market growth company in the region is mydentist, which is based in Kearsley near Manchester and describes itself as Europe's largest dental care provider. Its sales grew by 6 per cent to reach £566m in 2016, and it employs more than 7,100 people.
There are 13 North West entrants that were not on the league table last year including Windermere-based kitchenware retailer Lakeland and Barnoldswick-based bed manufacturer Silentnight.
Cheadle-headquartered financial services group Together (pictured) achieved the biggest profits in the North West with £122m, up by 26 per cent. The specialist lender was previously known as Jerrold Holdings, and provides finance products such as mortgages, secured loans and auction finance to property investors and private homebuyers.
The North West companies appear alongside high-profile businesses from around the UK such as Arsenal, Barbour, Dr Martens, Nando's, Skyscanner and Wagamama.
The league table and awards programme is sponsored by Grant Thornton, and compiled for the 12th year by research and networking events company Fast Track.
