Bentley development on verge of go-ahead

Date added: 26/01/2017

Luxury carmaker Bentley's bid to create a new logistics building at its Crewe headquarters is on the verge of securing the go-ahead.

Bentley's full planning application to regenerate a 3.1-acre area of hardstanding that the company owns to the east of its main vehicle manufacturing plant is due to be weighed up by Cheshire East Council's southern planning committee on Wednesday, 1 February 2017. The plot is currently used for vehicle and product storage.

An accompanying design and access statement by ABA Consulting indicates that the proposed logistics building (pictured), which would have a footprint of 92,570 sq ft, is designed to be used for the storage and handling of parts prior to being used on the assembly line. Although it would not accommodate any other part of the manufacturing process, it would give Bentley more space to support the increase in its production and product lines.

The facility would be of a modular steel-framed construction and configured into two blocks with a pitched roof over the pair.

Ahead of the committee meeting, a planning officer's report has recommended that the scheme should be approved.

It said: "The principle of the development is compatible with surrounding land uses and would facilitate the delivery of new jobs and economic growth for Bentley Motors, a large local employer. The proposal would thereby help to deliver significant economic and social benefits."

Bentley employs approximately 4,000 staff at its Crewe headquarters.
